The book you must have if you want to create and sell quilt and sewing patterns is: Publish Your Patterns. It’s a comprehensive guide to all of the steps for publishing, selling, and distributing patterns, and it includes extensive examples of materials.

The starting point for many quilt designs is the Electric Quilt software. Design individual blocks and complete quilts, experiment with colors, load images of actual fabrics, create a quilt from a scanned image, and more. Known among quilters simply as EQ, it has long been the software of choice for quilt pattern designers.

Another software package to consider for investment is Quilter's Creative Design. This software offers extensive tools for creating and printing quilting designs and pantographs (including text in a variety of fonts).

To create illustrations, manipulate photos, produce PDF booklets, and add security to your PDF documents you can do an online search for low-cost tools.
